Don't Let Your Mare Sniff Noses . . .

Memo to self - do not let mare sniff noses with other horses. Particularly do not let Dawn sniff noses. Especially do not let Dawn sniff noses while you're picking her feet. And most especially, do not let Dawn sniff noses while you're holding a back foot and picking it. Big lesson learned - don't do things that might be unsafe because you're in a hurry, or because you're not paying attention. But I already know this - but apparently I needed a reminder. I got a small reminder yesterday when Scout stepped hard on my foot, bruising several toes - I wasn't paying attention to my job leading him or to where he was.

But I clearly still wasn't paying attention, so got a stronger reminder which was delivered this morning. The end result:

Despite my stupidity, no serious or lasting damage seems to have been done. I've been working around horses for years, and should know better, and do know better - in fact my last thought before I got kicked was "this isn't a very good idea" - but I was in a hurry - how often has that gotten all of us in trouble? Dawn doesn't ground tie very well, so I almost always pick her feet on cross-ties - but I didn't today, because I was in a hurry (memo to self: teach Dawn to ground tie).

I was exceptionally lucky - I was very close to Dawn's foot when she kicked out - not at me but because she was threatening Charisma (if you've never been kicked it happens so fast you don't even know it's coming), and I was bent over in such a way that she caught me under the chin instead of in the face or the side of the head. The blow knocked me sideways but I didn't fall and hit my head. I've been checked out by the emergency room (they were empty at 8:30 a.m. on a Sunday, so I was in and out within an hour), and other than the bruising and scrapes, a very mild concussion, a number of lacerations to my tongue on both sides and strained TMJs, I'm basically OK. My jaw snapped together pretty hard, and some of my teeth are protesting a bit, but they're all there and none are broken.

I once worked with someone who said that it's OK to make mistakes - just don't make any fatal ones. I need to always, always remember to stay focussed and attentive when I'm around horses, and keep my safety and that of the horse at top of mind.

Don't let your mare sniff noses!

Glad to see you're not hurt and survived the kick. That had to hurt.
Colorful bruise, bet they loved the story in the emergency room, it's always hard to explain something like that isn't it? "Oh, well you see, I was picking my horses feet and I got kicked, but she wasn't trying to kick me...."
I know what you mean when you say, we all know better, but sometimes things just happen while we're not paying attention.

Oh no! Horses are great reminders to stick to the 'rules' aren't they? Glad you're not too badly injured, but wow - that's going to be some impressive bruising in a few days!

Ouch! I was just saying to someone yesterday that the only times Tucker has hurt me have been moments where I wasn't being exactly smart (Leading a frightened yearling down a gravel driveway in a thunderstorm, in flip flops... really? Not my finest moment). It's amazing how you can instinctually sense when you are about to do something not too bright, isn't it? Glad to hear it's not too serious, but man that is going to hurt tomorrow! Feel better... :(

Oh, Kate, I'm so sorry! I'm glad you'll be okay. I had a pair of hoofprints on the right side of my chest about 15 years ago - Sweetie came in from a rainy day and maybe she didn't see me walk in her stall - I just barely touched her back and it must have hurt/tickled/been cold and blammo! She double barrelled me! Thankfully, we got past that and I still love her more than ever. Here's to a quick healing and a rainbow of colors that means it will be gone soon!

Hugs!

Oh my gosh, Kate, that looks terrible. I hope someone else was at the barn at the time. I wish I were there to help you out. I hope you mend quickly.

Geez Kate . . . one helluva war wound!! Thank goodness (and I know you understand) it's mostly soft tissue AND you weren't pulling an MJ with your tongue. Heal well. An inch this way, an inch that . . whew . . . coulda been worse.

Oh wow, that is scary. Not a good place to get kicked! I'm glad it didn't end up worse than it did, but I bet it still isn't fun. I hope it heals up just fine.

You know, I've had the thought before when I'm bending over picking a rear hoof, that that particular task puts my head in the line of fire. Luckily Panama is 1) not a mare and 2) not an alpha personality. He's quite content to be a beta to my alpha, and he knows that when I've got a foot, it's mine until I give it up.

Famous last words, of course, so I'll just add the caveat, "Most of the time." ;o)

Out of lurkdom, just to say, Yowch! What a bummer about your injuries. I'm sorry it had to happen to you. It's amazing to me how fast something like tha can happen. I know all too well.....
I'll go further to say, "Be wary when your horse's tail is swishing" That means that they are irritable...and well, you know what happens then! gah!

Sure hope there's is no lasting damage or pain and you're soon able to eat a double wide submarine sandwich if you so desire. lol!

As someone else said, an inch this way or an inch that way and . . .

So glad that it isn't worse, but it is bad enough! Your point is one that we all need reminding of, just because we got away with it once doesn't mean we should do the same stupid thing again. We're all guily of it.

Kate!! Oh, my goodness. I am so glad you are alright. You are going to be sore for awhile though. Take care! We are thinking good thoughts for you here! My mom came racing down to the barn today to ask if I saw your blog. What a scare! Thanks for reminding us all to pay attention. It just takes one tiny second.

wow. My mare has an issue with one back foot and I tell everyone - don't talk to me while I'm doing this, I have to focus.

She's getting better, but thanks for the reminder.

I don't think I've ever even heard of getting a bruise under your chin. Glad you are relatively okay...

O-MY!!!
Sorry for the ouchies! Glad you still have your teeth and face though!!

I was jsut reading a comment over at Pony Girls..about cleaning eyes and udders...Wa threatens to kick me when I touch her teets!
I am getting creative though...squirting water there helps as I clean them..with a watchful eyeball on her!

Oh jeez...yeouch! Yep, you were lucky with that one. Sometimes stuff just happens, even if you're careful. I just broke a finger when a horse flew backwards. The reins slid through my fingers just fine, but the buckle caught my ring finger and broke it in 2 places. Horses.
