Horse Personalities

I had some fun today on horsepersonality.com. Take their horse personality quiz and see what you think - I think for my horses that the results were pretty accurate:

Lily is a Rock Star - "The Rock Stars are confident and charismatic. They are expressive and strong minded. They love to show you what they know but are hard to get to focus on the small details of the task. They are found in many competitive arenas, usually at the top of their field".

Norman is a Prize Fighter - "This horse has opinions and is ready to defend them. It is in your best interest to listen to him. To get the job done you must work with him. He will have numerous rules and requirements. He will also get you to the winner's circle when you have developed a working relationship. Unlike the Rock Star that is there for the glory and recognition, the Prize Fighter is there because they love the sport and the competition".

Maisie and Noble are People Pleasers - "Soft, sensitive, and very sweet describes this horse that will try and try to please you. They like to be told exactly what you want and then have you help them perform it. This is not your go-it-alone type of horse. They need you for support and can get very rattled if expectations are too high. This horse is in your life for the relationship".

Dawn is a Wild Card - "Strong minded but insecure, this personality needs an equally strong rider to help them feel safe. Be loving and affectionate, but don't give up your leadership. Once you have them on your page, they are very friendly and have a strong desire to please. They can be highly competitive and will give you their all. Not a horse for a junior or amateur until much later in life".

What personalities are your horses?

I've been riding Maisie at the walk under saddle. She does fine with this. I'm not liking the look of her left hind - there's a little filling above the pastern, but no heat, and she's not particularly sensitive there. I'm not sure if it's stocking up due to resting the stifle, or perhaps a minor lower suspensory strain. She's completely sound at the walk, although still off at the trot, although willing to go there without resistance. We'll keep walking until she's sound at the trot. The walking doesn't seem to hurt and she's not one to run in her dry lot turnout, so the more she can be moving (slowly), the better. If there's no significant improvement in a week, I'll have the vet out, although I'm not confident in their ability to deal with subtle unsoundness.

We're still waiting for the results of Maisie's thyroid and insulin blood tests. My chiropractor/vet thinks some of her recent behavioral challenges (being a bit "wild") might just be due to thyroid - that would be nice!

I'm sorry if I've been absent from blog comments recently - I've been reading and trying to comment, but Blogger has had a problem that kept me from commenting - with luck that's fixed!

  1. My OTTB is a Wild Card. That seems awfully accurate. He desperately wants me to tell him what to do - thus his lack of major success as an eventer but extremely rapid growth as a dressage horse. I refer to him as a mama's boy. He wants to do everything perfectly, feels very strongly about things not going right, but also *wants* me to tell him what to do. If he doesn't do what I ask, it's a guarantee I just goofed.

He didn't have that kind of confidence in past riders for whatever reason, so I'm repeatedly told he's a different horse now than he was before I got him.

  2. Net - thanks for stopping by and commenting - your horse sounds a lot like our Dawn - see my post "The Horse is Thinking About Leaving . . ." for more about that!

  3. Sounds like a fun quiz. I can't wait to see how some of my horses personalities come out.

Hope that Maisie comes around quickly. It's so hard to diagnose a lameness like this sometimes.

  4. Sorry to comment twice but I took that quiz and had to laugh, it was pretty accurate.

Dusty came out as a goddess and Blue as a solo artist. Pretty right on for those two. Thanks for the link.

  5. The quiz was fun. Gem is a Reluctant Rock Star - "This horse has a big ego, loves attention, loves to be in the limelight, but doesn't really like all the work it takes to be there. That is where you come in. You will need to push, persuade and motivate every inch of the way." Boy, that's pretty darn accurate!

I hope Maisie feels better soon!

  6. Abby is a wall flower. Ironically so was Corrie but I don't really know her well enough yet. Sure was fun though!

  7. Lily was steady eddie and Cibolo a people pleaser. Dead on, I'd say!

    Hope Maisie is better soon.

  8. Panama is apparently The Goddess. I agree with everything except for the part in bold:

"The Goddess is loved by most of the other horses and most people. They are expressive and sensitive and emotional. You will know how they feel. They try very hard to please and will worry and be anxious if you are not happy with them. In the negative they can have scattered energy that is hard to get focused. This personality can be loved on as much as you want."

Yes to expressive, sensitive, and emotional; yes to knowing how he feels; and yes to trying hard to please. I don't think he really worries about it though -- he's more prone to getting frustrated because he's not getting it (or I'm not getting it). I don't see the "scattered energy" as much anymore, but I think that's more because we've improved how we work together.

And absolutely, he can be loved on as much as I want. He eats it up. He's cute -- and he knows it! :o)

  11. Jimmy's the Steady Eddy :-)

"If you are a novice or amateur, this is the horse for you. They are quiet and predictable, loving and engaging, willing to learn new things, willing to hang out with you and do nothing. This is not your big ego, career-oriented horse. They are happy to just be. Consistent and loyal, all you need to do is enjoy!"

    Sounds just like him :-)

  12. Dee is "The Goddess". I don't think many at the barn would disagree with that title lol. Page came out as "The Wall Flower". At first I wasn't too sure about that but the more I thought about it, it seems like a good fit, too. I love stuff like this...super fun!

  13. That is awesome! Sam is Stedy Eady - so true!!!!!

  14. Toby is a People Pleaser, Tucker is a Reluctant Rock Star, and Chance is a Steady Eddy....I'd say the quiz was pretty right on.

Hope Maisie is going to be just fine. Thyroid would be something you could fix without too much fuss. It would take a bit of time, but most horses I've heard of respond well to treatment.

"Mystery issues," as we all know too well, are not so good to deal with. *sigh*

  17. Oh that was so fun! And right on the money, too.

    Apache is:

    A Wallflower

Wrap these sweet, kind, gentle horses up and keep them safe. They are not very brave and tend to internalize their worries. They want to please and will try very hard for you, but they can be pushed too fast very easily. They make few demands of you and are quite content to perform the same tasks repeatedly as long as you are pleased with them and the jobs are not to strenuous. Quiet enough for the beginner once they understand what is expected of them.
