Baths and Dawn Update

Pie and Drift both got real baths today - it was very hot and steamy - I've sprayed them off before but never washed them with soap - it was their first real baths. They both were great and very cooperative - I used EQyss shampoo.  Then Dawn got a gentle bath using baby shampoo - I very gently rinsed and soaped the areas on her neck and chest, where the skin and hair is peeling off, and patted them dry.

Dawn is doing very well - the swelling is mostly gone, even between her front legs, and although there is skin and hair sloughing off in patches on her chest, neck and shoulder, so far it's only the very topmost layer so there is still black skin underneath - no pinkness or open sores.  I talked to my vet this morning, and she says this is a common complication of cellulitis - the pressure from the swelling causes the hair follicles to die and may also cut off circulation to the outer layers of the skin.  The good news is that in Dawn's case the swelling didn't last that long, so the damage isn't too bad.

  3. You are such a good Mom. Hope you washed behind Pie's and Drift's ears! *G*

Glad Dawn is doing well. Stuff like that is always a bit worrisome. Bet that bath felt good to her.

  5. I'm sure Dawn's bath felt great on her skin. Good to hear that she's feeling better.

Drift and Pie sound like they enjoyed their baths too. Being QH's I as wondering if they've learned the trick of standing on the hose with all four feet at the same time. Ours do this every time they get their baths. None of the others only the QH's.

  7. I read the post you did on Dawn (a couple down) but what do you think caused the swelling? A bug bite?
    Glad she is better.

  8. Margaret - we think she was stung by wasps - she came in about a week ago with 4 huge welts on her neck. Those went away in a day but then she developed a lot of swelling and cellulitis several days later.

  9. Kate--computer has been at the doctor's all week--I'm just catching up. Sorry to hear about Dawn's problem with the wasp stings. Glad she's on the mend.
Also impressed with the work with the boys--especially building your and Pie's confidence on the trail again. (Maddie and I went out Wednesday, too! Post coming.)
