Deep Freeze for a While

We've had what for us is a relatively mild winter so far.  Only one short stretch where temperatures were below zero F (-17C), and we haven't had that much snow either (hope I'm not jinxing things by even saying that!).  The past couple of days haven't been that nice, though.  Yesterday the wind chills got to -10F (-23C) and I kept my horses in all day except for a couple of short excursions into paddocks while I cleaned their stalls - this would, of course, be the day that the teenager who cleans my stalls wasn't available.  Fortunately, we have heated water buckets - it can get down to 10F in the barn on the coldest days - and heated water troughs, as well as frost-free (usually) water hydrants - so water's not an issue.  It's very cold again today, but the wind chills are supposed to get above zero F, so the horses will probably be happy to be outside.

Not too much is happening around here, although my horses did have a brief vet visit to have their annual Coggins test blood draw (Wisconsin requires the certificate to be in the same calendar year so the boys needed new ones for their trip up there in March).  All three were perfect for the vet as usual.

And the farrier came to do their trims.  And I'm happy to report that Dawn and Pie were perfect as usual, and Drifter was as well - he stood there like a champ - he's come a long way with his hoof-handling.

Not much else going on, but there'll be some news coming up . . .

  1. Wow that's cold. Here in Ing-ee-land my human thinks it's cold when it gets below -2c.

  2. We're cold here too. But it's been a relatively mild winter for us too. Glad everyone is doing fine. Spring will be here before we know it. Yeah!

  3. Cold here, too. (Although not quite as cold as you are experiencing) It was sunny and pretty yesterday. I thought maybe I'd ride. But, as soon as I went out, I changed my mind about that!

  4. It is cold! I was going to make a trip up to WI today to see Corrie and then looked at the weather .. NO WAY! Next weekend is supposed to be in the 40's.

I miss having my horse in my backyard, but I do not miss winter water woes!

    Keep warm!

  5. We have a major snow advisory here today...white outs and the snow is coming down very quickly. I expect a foot at this rate. Sounds like it's been a lot colder where you are. Isn't it nice to have horses that behave well for the vet and farrier...

  6. Cold here too, but moderating during the coming week.

It has been a remarkable winter so far, so I won't even mention the "S" word. All we need to do is hold out for a few more weeks.

Coggins due for my Boys too. Hope my vet bill from last year is paid off before I start the Spring inoculations and stuff. *sigh*

  7. Hope your cold snap doesn't last too long. It's feeling like spring here; the geese are arriving, my iris is putting up new shoots, more songbirds are arriving and we saw a robin yesterday although I heard one two weeks ago. All signs of an early spring.

  9. Cold here as well, highs just above freezing yesterday and today with lows around 20. We even had a few snow flurries yesterday. Thankfully this moves out after tomorrow! This is only the 2nd time this winter everyone has had blankets on.

  10. Hope the horses had a chance to fill in their winter coats despite the warmth! Thank goodness for heated water buckets :)
