Blogger Problems - Anyone Else Having These - May Move to Wordpress . . .

I wanted to check if anyone else is having issues with Blogger recently.

The two issues I'm having are, first, huge amounts of referrer spam.  This is showing up in stats and causing my page views to go way up.  There are a lot of questionable links in the log, and most of the servers appear to be in Germany, although that doesn't mean a lot as the spammers could be anywhere. This problem, while annoying, doesn't bother me that much, since I don't care about the stats and never click on the links so the spammers are wasting their time.

But there's a second problem that's worse.  Recently, I've started getting a huge amount of spam email to the email address I use for Blogger.  I know it's a Blogger issue because I only use this email address for Blogger.  I've posted on the help forum to see if anyone has a solution - there used to be an option in the profile setting to remove your email address from public view, but that option doesn't seem to be there anymore - more Google/Blogger stuff I expect.

Anyone else?  I could take the blog private, but I expect that wouldn't solve the email issue.

Also, I'd be interested in people's experiences switching to a different blogging platform that doesn't have the Google issues, including privacy issues.  I'd be interested in what platform you use, how you like it, and how the export process went.

Please post replies here in the comments - I bet there are more than a few of us who'd be interested in the answers.

  1. I'm having different problems with blogger. I can't get it to show the blogs I follow...I was lucky today in that I FINALLY was able to see my blog list! (...pulling out hair...)

  2. I do not have a blog but am having problems, especially this morning (6/27/13) getting to my Dashboard where all the blogs I follow are listed. First I had only one blog listed; then I got the Blogger Buzzfeed. Refreshed and got nothing. Fourth time's a charm and here I am. Not sure what is going on--an update taking place perhaps??--but I follow other blogs on WordPress and the issues seem fewer. At least from the "reader/commenter" side of things.

  3. I have two blogs, my own, on Blogger, and the trail club's on Word Press.
I haven't had the problem you have with the spam email, but I doget a lot of random hits in my stats. Like you said, that's really no big deal.
Both platforms are pretty user friendly, but after using Blogger for quite some time, WP took some adjusting. Loading photos is the biggest difference, but I've gotten used to it. Can't say I prefer one over the other enough to transfer both blogs to the same place.
    No help at all, right?

  4. I posted on my blog yesterday that in my blog feed on dashboard I am showing a lot of pornographic blogs in my feed. In my subscribe list they are not there so I have no idea how to get rid of them. And yes - same for me on the spamming. Holy cow!

  5. I actually have the same problem with the referrer spam, but I never check my inbox for the email I use for blogger so I don't know if I got spammed.

  7. I'm getting the referrer spam too - stacks of it, especially right after a new post. Also getting the email spam which I suspected came through blogger...

Will be interested in what you find out. Please share :D

  8. Kate...no problems here. If you go to settings and don't allow annonymous comments, does that make a difference?

  9. I use self hosted wordpress for my personal blog and wordpress.com for our company blog. Have had excellent experience with both, and think they are FAR superior to blogger. It's also very easy to import posts from your blogger blog.

  10. I get the referrer spam also. I have no idea if the email address associated with the blog is being spammed because it is just a junk email address that I use for things like this, so I rarely even log into it.

  11. Kate, yes, your email is posted on your profile. Here's where the setting was moved to:

From your Blogger homepage, click your Blogger name in the upper right-hand corner to pull down the drop down menu. Click on Blogger Profile. Then click the orange Edit Profile button in the upper right-hand corner. There are check boxes for sharing your profile, your email address, and the blogs you follow. Just uncheck the box that says "Show my email address".

  12. Cheryl Ann and TBDancer, I have had the same problem occasionally with the blogs I follow not showing up. Usually a page refresh takes care of it.

I've been using Blogger since 2005, and although I have used WordPress for client blogs, I still love Blogger for my own blogs!

    1. Thanks, Katharine. Yes, the "page refresh" handled things for me yesterday on the fourth try. I am nothing if not persistent ;o)

  13. I haven't had any of the problems you mention. I do not allow annonymous comments which has made a huge difference in the amount of spam I get. I have a Wordpress blog as well and I like it for my poetry but it is more challenging to format and insert pictures and stuff. I think the challenging part means that it can do really cool stuff if you are computer language literate -- but I'm not.

  14. Actually, I need to amend my comment. I don't get any spam at all since I linked to Google+. I guess there are benefits to their tight security for commenting after all. :)

  15. Sorry About Your Problems! I've Not Noticed Those...My Spam Filter On Yahoo Is Good, It Fills Up.
I Did Open a WORD PRESS blog...I've Got So Many Close People In My Neighborhood Following Me,I Can't Be Honest AbOut Somethings...So, I'm Not Truly Invested There Yet...But Soon After some Changes, Will Be.

Sounds Like You've Got Good Advice so Far.

  16. I don't have too many problems with spam, although I have had some in the past. I don't *think* my email is visible on my blog, so that might be part of it. Hope you get it sorted out. I've nominated you for a Liebster award on my blog, although I think you may well have more followers than people are technically supposed to have to be nominated - but who cares about rules!? Don't feel obliged to do it, just thought I'd let you know it's there on my blog http://diaryofayounghorse.blogspot.co.uk/ if you would like to pick it up :)

  17. Good luck with this, Kate. I haven't had extra spam. I get a lot of spam because Brian and I have websites that link to our emails - we have always had a spam problem. Recently, I think my spam is going down, but so is my blogger posting. I just don't post as much - and you are right, a new post brings more spam.

I love blogger though - I think their platform for design and page creation is way better than Wordpress for my own needs.
